Discovery of a Signal: An intercepted signal coming from the Moon is a classic, high-stakes science fiction
trigger, a compelling event that triggers this (fictional) mission to the
Moon.
The NASA/ESA angle: This is an ambiguous signal—perhaps complex, repeating patterns similar to the fictional "DNA-style" signals sometimes theorized in other contexts, that are only initially picked up by a deep-space network or a specific lunar-observing mission. The ambiguity necessitates a manned mission to investigate.
HAL and the ARK's Role: Our idea of HAL and the ARK being the only entities with the data and computing power to decode or properly survey the signal's source is
cinematic gold. This creates a reliance on the specialized crew and technology, justifying their central role in the mission.
Evidence of Life: The discovery of evidence of other life on the Moon is a monumental event that would instantly trigger a high-priority mission.
The Nature of the Find: This might not be a living organism, but a biosignature—perhaps an unexpected concentration of organic molecules, fossils in an ice sample from a permanently shadowed crater, or a unique biological byproduct found by a robotic lander or rover (like the kind used in current Mars or icy moon exploration proposals).
All of these possibilities are for John Storm to discover and interpret.
HAL and the ARK's Role: If the discovery is a subtle anomaly in vast datasets (e.g., spectral analysis of lunar dust or ice), the advanced data processing capabilities of HAL and the ARK would be crucial for initial identification and later, for guiding the human investigation on the lunar surface. This adds a layer of mystery and technical necessity.

THORNE'S GAMBIT - SPACE PIRATE'S SHADOW LAUNCH
The holographic projection shimmered above the sleek black conference table, displaying a lunar crater bathed in stark, ethereal light. It was a perfect, crystalline image, betraying no sign of the peril hiding within.
Marcus
Thorne, CEO of Ares
Corporation, did not look at the moonscape. His gaze was fixed on the single, small, audio-only comms icon glowing discreetly in the corner of the display.
"They are in the crater at the coordinates provided, Mr. Thorne. Confirmation is solid," a voice, smooth and utterly devoid of regional accent—a hallmark of years of corporate and government neutrality—filtered through the encrypted line. Thorne knew this voice belonged to Agent X, his invaluable, albeit naïve, asset within
NASA.
Thorne permitted himself a thin, almost invisible smile. "Yes, thank you, Agent X. The reward will be delivered as usual. A private key is already en route to your secure vault."
A beat of hesitation. The asset was nervous; a useful trait, as it maintained obedience. "Marcus, er, Mr. Thorne," X began, the use of the first name an unconscious slip of panic, "I'd suggest disguising any shadow as a deep space probe. Doctor Vance will be looking out for anomalies, and
John Storm is not to be messed with. He has... a reputation."
Thorne leaned back in his plush leather chair, fingers steepled beneath his chin. He enjoyed the subtle confirmation of Storm’s reputation; it validated the scale of his own operation.
"Good advice, X. A deep space probe it shall be. Tell me, do they suspect anything? Anya Sharma, the crew?"
"No. They believe the Swann's data acquisition phase is complete and are preparing for a short return trajectory. They are celebrating, in fact. They believe the work is done. Safe and sound," X reported, sounding genuinely relieved.
"Excellent," Thorne purred. "Keep us informed, X. They will come to no harm."
The connection cut. Thorne watched the comms icon fade, his smile hardening into a mask of pure, predatory intent.
THE
PREDATOR'S CALCULUS
No harm. The lie was essential for the mole, but utterly ludicrous to Thorne. Harm was the currency of his ambition.
Cleopatra,
HAL,
Anya
Sharma, Dr.
Vance, Lena
Hadid, and John Storm—all were now variables in an equation he was about to solve with zero. Their 'SpaceArk' vessel was merely a delivery vehicle, and the data they carried—the very reason Ares had spent fortunes tracking the Swann's movements—was a prize too valuable to share, even with the scientists who'd risked their lives to gather it.
The arrogance of science, Thorne thought, rising to his feet and walking over to a floor-to-ceiling viewport that overlooked the neon-lit sprawl of a corporate megacity. They believe they do this for humanity. I do it for power.
The data Lena Hadid had secured was the precise mapping of a unique crystalline structure within the lunar subsurface, a structure that would make the Ares Corporation the sole, dominant power in the space-mining sector for the next century. Anya Sharma and NASA had paid for science; Thorne was prepared to kill for control.
"They have what I need," Thorne muttered, the words a low-frequency vibration of
steel. "They are expendable."
He turned and addressed the air, his voice now commanding. "Activate Project 'Scythe.' Remote launch sequence. No human pilot. Set the signature profile to 'Orion Deep-Scan Probe – NASA R&D Alpha-7.' We will give Vance a ghost to chase."
A disembodied, synthesized female voice responded: "Acknowledged. Project Scythe autonomous drone is armed and launched. Disguise profile confirmed. Target coordinates uplinked."
Thorne nodded, his mind already three steps ahead of the interception. The drone, sleek and sinister beneath its holographic cloak, was already streaking away from Earth, its internal
AI programmed to prioritize three objectives:
1. Capture the 'SpaceArk's' Data Core: Priority one. Extraction, not transmission.
2. Neutralize the Crew: Zero survivors. The disappearance must look like a deep-space failure, a tragic accident caused by an unknown anomaly—the risk of any surviving witness was intolerable.
3. Self-Destruct: The drone would destroy itself after achieving objectives, leaving no trace of Ares's involvement.
John Storm is a problem, Thorne conceded internally, a dangerous wildcard. But even the legendary Storm was just a man against a programmed machine, a cold, unfeeling instrument of corporate will. Storm might be a force of nature, but Thorne commanded a force of technology.
Thorne walked toward the exit, a feeling of immense satisfaction settling in his gut. He was not a pirate chasing a frigate; he was an apex predator hunting an unwitting, slow-moving herd. The fate of the 'SpaceArk' was sealed the moment Agent X confirmed its location.
"Let the stars claim their victims," Thorne whispered, exiting the room, leaving the silent, illuminated image of the SpaceArk's crater location to await the arrival of its shadow.
Back
on the SpaceArk, the crew were in a celebratory mood. They had no idea
that Marcus Thorne was gunning for them.
