FABULOUS - You can't beat nature. We'll not be aiming to replicate this 100%, but doing an interpretation based on likely evolution with a lot of artistic licence thrown in.
From July 2018 we decided to revisit the chassis design of our giant robot insect to see if we could simplify the transmission.
Unfortunately, we could not find any inline (single plane) gimbal joints at all, meaning that they would have to be custom built. To be sure of the design, we decided to conduct a series of experiments using a very basic wooden frame to replace the (rose) hip joints of the previous design, the idea being to define a way of transferring the rotation from the output shaft of the 500w electric motor units to the reciprocating stroke of the hexapod legs more effectively.
GIMBAL HIP - This is our first experimental inline gimbal joint. Please note that this photograph is copyright © Jameson Hunter Ltd August 31 2018. You will need permission from Jameson Hunter to be able to reproduce it.
STEEL RINGS - We managed to find two suitable sections of steel tubing, but had to make the third by cutting a section from the larger and re-welding. KNEE JOINT - Before making the legs in aluminium we decided to use cardboard tubes bonded to wooden joints. Please note that this photograph is copyright © Jameson Hunter Ltd August 31 2018. You will need permission from Jameson Hunter to be able to reproduce it.
WOOD IS GOOD - Dowel and square section timbers were made to be joined with a steel pin. Please note that this photograph is copyright © Jameson Hunter Ltd August 31 2018. You will need permission from Jameson Hunter to be able to reproduce it.

Once the geometry is proven, we might proceed to design a sturdier gimbal to produce six identical components - one for each of the hexapod's six legs.
The design of the chassis will then come under scrutiny ....... so as to fabricate a steel prototype version.
